To be an effective School Psychologist, it is essential to prioritize your mental and physical well-being this holiday season. Avoiding burnout should be at the top of the list. The following tips will help you stay motivated and focused while providing effective services to students.

Set Realistic Goals

You may be tempted to go all-in during this festive season but it’s important to set limitations. Having a long to-do list may trigger feelings of inadequacy when you fail to complete everything. Instead, prioritize goals that align with your strengths and delegate or postpone others not possible to achieve at the moment. This helps you remain productive and focused on what matters most.

Break Up Your Days

Lack of boundaries between work and personal life can hamper your productivity and lead to burnout. Avoid scheduling back-to-back appointments and take some time to stretch, take a walk, breathe or indulge in a hobby outside of work. This helps you stay refreshed and rejuvenated throughout the day.

Practice Mindful Self-Care

This involves doing activities that make you feel good like meditation, journaling, practicing yoga or going for a facial. Consider setting aside at least 20 minutes each day to practice self-care. Taking care of yourself enables you to handle stress more effectively and improve your overall wellbeing.

Have a Support System in Place

Reach out to family, friends, and colleagues who can offer support and encouragement when needed. Share your achievements and discuss challenges along the way. Social connections help you feel connected and valued, important ingredients to the recipe for good mental health.

Learn to say “No”

It’s important to recognize when you’re already doing more than you can handle, and when it’s time to say “no”. Saying “yes” to everything will leave you stressed, exhausted, and may cause you to become burnt-out. Saying”No” allows you to set your boundaries and communicate your priorities.

Monitor Your Workload

Understanding your workload can help you prioritize your work and avoid burnout. Look for tasks and activities that are draining and find ways to manage them. It’s important to remember that school psychologists play an essential role in their school communities and it is important to take care of oneself to be better equipped to serve students.

Avoiding burnout during the holiday season requires self-care and planning for a balanced work and life. This may not be easy, but an essential step in ensuring you remain efficient and effective while positively impacting the lives of students. Prioritizing your mental and physical health allows you to show up each day as the best version of yourself, and in turn, provide quality service to those in need. Remember, you do not have to be the superhero all the time, take a moment to breathe, and prioritize your wellbeing.
