In an effort to combat the critical shortage of school psychologists in the state, the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Education has introduced a new school psychology program. With an aim to provide essential services to students, this program is designed to bridge the gap in Alabama’s educational system.
Importance of School Psychologists
School psychologists play a crucial role in the education system by conducting assessments and interventions for students facing learning and behavioral challenges. Additionally, they collaborate with teachers and administrators to create a positive learning environment.
Shortage in Alabama
Alabama faces a pressing shortage of school psychologists, with only one psychologist available for every 2,500 students. This figure falls significantly below the national average of one psychologist for every 1,000 students, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.
Addressing the Shortage
The UAB School of Education’s program is specifically designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to become effective school psychologists. The curriculum focuses on consultation, interdisciplinary collaboration, crisis intervention, and behavioral management.
Upcoming Cohort
The program is currently in the review process for its first cohort, which is set to commence in the fall of 2023. To learn more about the program and its application process, please visit the official program website.
