- The Active Recruitment, Training and Educator Retention to serve our Youth (ARTERY) program at Nevada State University is the university’s first program focused on addressing the shortage of mental health professionals in schools.
- The program attracted psychology student Stephanie Sandoval Aleman, who had previously benefited from school mental health services as a student. She was interested in giving back in the same way.
- A primary aim of the ARTERY program is attracting students like Aleman to the school-based mental health field to help meet the rising demand.
- National and state organizations recommend a ratio of one school psychologist per 500 students. However, Nevada currently operates at around double that ratio, with one psychologist for every 2,000 students. The ARTERY program hopes to help close this gap.
