Last month, the New York State Psychological Association recognized Nina Weisenreder, a psychologist at Oceanside High School, as the 2024 recipient of the Gil Trachtman Leadership in School Psychology Award. This accolade honors her outstanding contributions to school psychology.
Dr. Weisenreder is set to receive this prestigious award during the NYSPA annual conference on October 17. She has been celebrated for her pioneering work in developing innovative mental health programs that have significantly affected students, families, and staff within the Oceanside School District.
The Gil Trachtman Leadership in School Psychology Award is awarded to professionals who make substantial impacts on student mental health, embodying the principles of collaboration, compassion, and evidence-based practice.
Dr. Weisenreder’s leadership is particularly evident in her coordination of the high school’s Wellness Center. This center plays a crucial role in fostering student mental health through educational initiatives and community-building activities. It was established in response to increasing concerns about student mental well-being, which have been intensifying due to the coronavirus pandemic but were noticeable even earlier. Under Dr. Weisenreder’s guidance, the Wellness Center has become a pivotal space for open discussions on mental health and provides students with the resources to manage stress, anxiety, and other challenges effectively.
