Scientists from Princeton University and the Simons Foundation have uncovered four biologically and clinically distinct subtypes of autism, using data from over 5,000 children in the SPARK autism cohort study. By employing a novel computational model and a “person-centered” approach that analyzed over 230 traits per individual, the researchers identified unique developmental paths, traits, and genetic signatures for each subtype. This breakthrough offers a deeper understanding of autism’s genetic complexity and paves the way for more personalized diagnostic and treatment strategies.
