DENVER – The University of Colorado Denver has secured a $3.15 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to launch Project ASPIRE, a groundbreaking training program for mental health professionals in schools. This initiative aims to recruit and provide specialized training for individuals interested in promoting equity-focused mental healthcare.
Under the guidance of CU Denver’s clinical assistant professor Rachel Stein, the School Psychology Program will focus on reducing barriers to accessing mental health services, particularly for early childhood, bilingual, and economically disadvantaged students. With a shortage of mental health providers relative to the number of students, effective services have been challenging to provide.
The ASPIRE program offers a unique opportunity for aspiring mental health professionals, like graduate student Emily Adams, to pursue their career goals. Adams, who has spent 12 years working in low-income, diverse schools, recognizes the urgent need for school psychologists. The program’s emphasis on equity, access, and bilingual work aligns perfectly with her passion for special education.
Financial support is also available to students, allowing them to choose careers that align with their commitment to community service rather than focusing solely on income. Through this initiative, students like Adams can provide the support and resources necessary for students to flourish.
Another student, JK Gregory, a former educator with seven years of experience, is drawn to the program’s emphasis on supporting marginalized communities in education. As a person of color, Gregory acknowledges the challenges but remains committed to advocating for underrepresented students and addressing biases present in educational structures. Gregory’s passion lies in bridging the gap and providing essential resources and support to his community.
The grant will fund two cohorts of students, beginning in the fall semesters of 2023, 2024, and 2025, providing comprehensive support throughout their training. Applications for Project ASPIRE are now open, with a deadline of November 15.
