In a recent decision, the Board of Trustees at the College of Saint Rose announced the closure of the esteemed institution after the 2023-2024 academic year. The 103-year-old independent college, founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, will cease academic instruction due to financial challenges. The College, however, remains committed to serving its current undergraduate and graduate students, offering a full Spring 2024 course schedule.
The closure decision stems from the difficulties faced by many small, private higher-education institutions in the Northeast. The College of Saint Rose has found it increasingly challenging to manage operating expenses amidst a shrinking pool of high school graduates and the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Board Chair Jeffrey D. Stone, “it is with a heavy heart that the Board decided to close the college at the end of this academic year, as we lack the financial resources to operate for the full 2024-2025 academic year.”
Despite exhaustive efforts, the College could not evade closure; however, its focus now shifts to easing the transition for students, faculty, and staff. The College will assist students in graduating or continuing their studies at other institutions. Plans will also be outlined to ensure students can earn their degrees effectively. To minimize the disruption caused by closure, an orderly teach-out plan will be implemented, meeting the requirements of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the New York State Education Department.
Faculty, administrators, and staff will have access to resources provided by the College’s Human Resource department to aid in their career transition. Additionally, the College website hosts more information related to the decision, including a comprehensive set of FAQs.
During an emotional gathering, College President Marcia White expressed deep sorrow in delivering the news and gratitude towards the faculty and staff for their unwavering commitment to Saint Rose and its mission. The Fall of 2024 will not see the reopening of the College, signifying a significant loss to the students and the community.
While the closure of the College of Saint Rose is undoubtedly heartbreaking, the institution is dedicated to supporting its stakeholders during this challenging period.
