    University of Virginia leads the way in training future school psychologists

    • University of Virginia’s School of Education and Human Development will offer a new Education Specialist in School Psychology degree beginning this fall.
    • The three-year program includes two years of coursework at UVA followed by a full-time, yearlong internship in a school setting.
    • Graduates will receive state and national certification as school psychologists in preK-12 schools.
    • Application deadline for the first cohort of students is Feb. 1.
    • The program prepares graduates to deliver comprehensive services, including intervention, assessment, and consultation, to diverse student populations.
    • Specialized training includes evidence-based assessment and interventions, as well as collaboration with students, families, and community partners.
    • There is currently a nationwide shortage of school psychologists and UVA’s program aims to help alleviate this issue.
    • Schools are struggling to provide sufficient mental health services to students due to the shortage of school psychologists.
    • Loudoun County Public Schools supervisor Charles Barrett believes the new program will be tremendously helpful in preparing additional graduate students for these roles.
