Dr. Lee Cohen, a seasoned professional with over two decades of experience, has long been a pillar of the West Orange Public School District. Through his unwavering commitment to students, families, and colleagues, Dr. Cohen has exemplified the highest standards of school psychology. This year, his remarkable contributions were acknowledged on a statewide stage when he was named the New Jersey Association of School Psychologists (NJASP) School Psychologist of the Year.

A Prestigious Honor in the Field

The NJASP School Psychologist of the Year award is one of the highest honors in the profession, recognizing outstanding psychologists who demonstrate excellence in counseling, crisis intervention, and collaboration while promoting diversity and inclusion. With more than 3,000 school psychologists serving institutions across New Jersey, this accolade is a testament to the profound impact Dr. Cohen has had in his field.

“I was completely surprised and without words when NJASP informed me of the award,” said Dr. Cohen. “Apparently, I was nominated by some of my co-workers in the district, the Graduate School at Montclair State University, former parents and students, as well as some of my previous graduate school interns—some of whom are now amazing school psychologists in our district and neighboring districts.”

For school psychologists, the ability to shape lives and create lasting change is at the heart of the profession. Dr. Cohen’s recognition is a powerful reminder of how dedicated service within the field can uplift entire communities.

A Career Dedicated to Transforming Lives

Dr. Cohen began his professional path in the late 1990s, working in child and adolescent psychiatric care at what is now Trinitas Hospital. It was here, serving alongside colleagues such as the current Superintendent of West Orange Public Schools, Hayden Moore, that he developed his understanding of complex psychiatric issues and the tools to address them effectively.

“It was at Trinitas that I learned how to truly help kids and understand the myriad psychiatric issues facing individuals,” Dr. Cohen recalled. “Hayden Moore and others strongly encouraged me to consider West Orange as a place to grow my career, and I’m so glad I listened.”

Since joining West Orange Public Schools in 2001, Dr. Cohen has contributed significantly in roles across the district. Initially supporting elementary schools, he expanded his work to meet the needs of students across all educational levels. His multifaceted role includes supporting students with diverse needs, mentoring emerging professionals in school psychology, and fostering a collaborative and caring school culture.

Among his many achievements, Dr. Cohen has led the district’s Extended School Year Program, provided essential professional development, and served as a Crisis Prevention Instructor. Notably, since 2006, he has been the driving force behind West Orange High School’s alternative program for students under the special education umbrella.

“The alternative program has given me the opportunity to work with incredible students, families and staff,” Dr. Cohen said. “I still keep in touch with many of my former students and their parents, and it’s so fulfilling to hear about their successes.”

His dedication to building meaningful relationships with students and their families has become a hallmark of his career, illustrating how professional psychologists can maintain meaningful connections while navigating the systemic challenges of education.

Inspiring the Next Generation of School Psychologists

Dr. Cohen’s commitment goes beyond his immediate professional responsibilities. For the past 17 years, he has worked to inspire students through guest speaking engagements in Advanced Placement (AP) Psychology and sociology classes at West Orange High School. His aim is to cultivate interest in psychology careers among young learners, ensuring a strong future for the field.

“This honor isn’t just about me,” Dr. Cohen shared. “It’s about the incredible people I’ve worked with, the students who’ve inspired me, and the community that has supported me every step of the way. West Orange is truly a special place.”

Reflections on Leadership in School Psychology

Dr. Cohen’s educational background reinforces his deep commitment to professional excellence. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Behavioral Science from York College of Pennsylvania, a Master’s in Educational Psychology and School Psychology from Montclair State University, and a Doctorate in School Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University. His certifications in supervision, principalship, and superintendency further underscore his comprehensive understanding of educational systems.

Superintendent Hayden Moore summarized Dr. Cohen’s legacy best:

“Dr. Cohen exemplifies everything you would hope for in a school psychologist. His dedication to his students, families and colleagues is truly remarkable, and his influence can be felt throughout the district. This award is a testament to the countless lives he has touched.”

    A Model for the Profession

Dr. Cohen’s recognition as the NJASP School Psychologist of the Year serves as both an inspiration and a challenge to his peers. It highlights the profound impact school psychologists can have when they bring expertise, empathy, and persistence into their daily work.

For those in the field, Dr. Cohen’s story underscores the importance of striving for excellence in every aspect of practice—from working directly with students to cultivating community partnerships and inspiring future professionals. His career is a reminder of the extraordinary potential of school psychologists to empower individuals and strengthen educational systems.
