WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) – School psychologists play an essential role in supporting students’ mental health, learning challenges, and behavioral needs. However, in the Washoe County School District (WCSD), these professionals are stretched thin, juggling responsibilities across multiple schools and assisting numerous students each day.

School psychologists are tasked with addressing the most critical needs within schools. They work to improve student outcomes by focusing on learning challenges, mental well-being, and social-emotional development. Their work ensures that students are given the tools they need to succeed academically, socially, and behaviorally. Additionally, they contribute to supporting students’ mental health on a district-wide scale.

“We do provide mental health services. I help team up with the counselors and also our mental health professional here in this building to provide wraparound services whenever students are needed,” explained Chidi Okonkwo, a school psychologist at Hug High School.

The Vital Role of Psychologists in Schools

School psychologists are the primary mental health providers embedded within the educational system. They often collaborate with counselors and mental health professionals to create a holistic support system for students. However, a larger issue looms over the state.

“There’s a mental health crisis in Nevada right now where we don’t have enough providers,” shared Elizabeth Sexton, a school psychologist at WCSD.

This shortage of mental health professionals is acutely felt within the district, where limited resources make it challenging to ensure every student receives the assistance they need. With student enrollment steadily increasing, the district finds itself at a critical juncture.

“If there were more school psychologists, I think those kids who aren’t coming to school, we would have the capacity to meet their needs,” noted Sexton.

Addressing the Growing Demand for Support

The rising number of students in the WCSD highlights an urgent need for additional psychologists. This issue is compounded by increasing external and internal pressures faced by students.

“Our schools are growing, and our students’ needs are growing. They are challenged by the outside world as well as what’s going on inside of the schools, and how do we help them to cope and empower them with the strategies needed using our school psychologists?” said Wanda Washington, Recruiting Project Coordinator at WCSD.

The district views school psychologists as a vital resource for managing these challenges. However, the strain on the current team makes it difficult to meet the growing demands effectively.

    Despite Challenges, Dedication Remains Strong

Like any profession, school psychologists face obstacles. Yet, their dedication remains steadfast, driven by the knowledge that their work profoundly impacts students’ lives. Many hope their efforts will inspire future generations to pursue careers dedicated to helping others.

“Someone had said to me once, do you really want to be doing that when you’re 40? And that’s when I became a school psychologist, and I found that it just keeps opening up new avenues,” shared Sexton.

To become a school psychologist, candidates are required to earn a master’s degree in psychology, have at least two years of relevant experience, and obtain national board certification.

    The Path Forward

The work of school psychologists is indispensable, but addressing current resource gaps is crucial to ensure lasting support for both students and educators. The Washoe County School District recognizes the need for immediate action to recruit and retain more qualified professionals who can address these challenges head-on. By strengthening these essential roles, schools can create an environment where all students have the opportunity to thrive.
